It usually starts as something you notice out the window. A thick ridge of ice building along the edge of the roof, a row of heavy icicles hanging from the gutter. At first it looks almost picturesque. Then a warm afternoon comes, the snow up top starts to melt, and you spot a faint water stain appearing on the ceiling near an exterior wall — and suddenly that pretty ice is a problem you didn't plan for on a cold week in Clackamas.
That's the moment most people go looking for help, and it's also the moment things feel stressful: it's cold, there's water potentially getting into your home, and climbing up to deal with roof ice yourself is both dangerous and a genuinely bad idea. Our whole approach is built to take that stress off your plate. You call, we come look, we reduce the ice dam safely from the ground where we can, and you don't touch a ladder. Simple and dependable, which is exactly what you want when there's ice on the roof and water on the ceiling.
Below is a plain-language look at what's happening and how we handle it.
An ice dam isn't really a weather problem — it's mostly a heat problem, and understanding that makes the whole thing less mysterious for a homeowner in Clackamas, OR. Here's the short version of the cycle:
Heat escapes through the roof and warms the snow sitting on the upper part, which melts and trickles downward.
The eaves stay cold because they hang past the heated part of the house, so the meltwater refreezes when it reaches them.
That refrozen ice builds a ridge — the dam — and water then pools behind it with nowhere to drain.
The trapped water backs up under the shingles, which is where it can find its way inside and cause the stains and damage in Clackamas.
Because it's driven partly by your home's own heat loss, ice dams can be a repeat visitor, especially on the older homes common around here — which is why reducing the dam and understanding the cause both matter.
Each service below is about safely dealing with the ice and making it easy on you.
When a dam has formed and water's a concern, we work to reduce it carefully — no aggressive chipping that could damage your shingles or gutters. We handle it from the ground where the situation allows, so the immediate risk on your Clackamas, OR roof gets relieved without anyone climbing onto an icy surface.
Since ice dams come mostly from heat loss, real prevention means reducing that heat loss and managing the snow up top, and we're glad to walk you through the practical steps. We'll be straight with you that this lowers the odds rather than guaranteeing an ice-dam-free winter, because your home's heat loss keeps the cycle going in Clackamas.
Clearing some of the snow off the roof removes material that feeds the dam and eases the weight on the structure. We reduce roof snow safely, working from the ground with the right tools wherever we can, so you stay off the ladder and your Clackamas, OR roof carries less load.
Steeper roofs and larger commercial roofs are trickier and riskier, which is exactly when it shouldn't be a DIY project. We take on those more demanding roofs in Clackamas with suitable methods and equipment, keeping safety first the whole time.
If water's already getting inside, it's time-sensitive, and we get that. We respond to active leaks in Clackamas, OR as conditions allow, work to relieve the dam, and then point you toward fixing the underlying cause so you're not back here next winter.
Big ridges of ice at the eaves, heavy icicles, and any water stains appearing inside near exterior walls are the signs to watch. If you're seeing those on a roof in Clackamas, it's worth having it looked at rather than climbing up yourself.
